Inspired By The Rudge-Whitworth ‘Red Hand Of Ulster’ Chainring.
How And Why This Irish Mythological Symbol Became The Logo Of An English Bicycle Company Is Something Of A Mystery, But True To The Symbol’S Complex Usage At Home, There’S Quite A History Of It Appearing On Bikes Over The Last 100 Or So Years. Starting In 1894, It Made Its Way On To Thousands Of Bicycles, Including A Four-Wheeled Cyclecar And Billie Fleming’S 1938 Women’S Year Record Bike (A Record Beaten Only Last Year), Before Being Licensed To Italian Wheelbuilders. Stripped Of Its English Name Under Mussolini’S Orders, The Red Hand Logo Remained And Still Appears Fairly Unchanged On Italian Motorbike Wheels Today.
